Review: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Stained Gloss

Hello Readers!

So one of my favorite products are the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars. Since my post reviewing and swatching my entire Lip Tar Collection was so popular, I am following up with my review of their Stained Glosses I picked up during the Sephoa VIB Spring Chic Week Sale.

The OCC Stained Glosses come in the same tube like packaging and include a mini sized lip brush just as the original Lip Tar packaging. Although they are called a gloss, they still appear very bright in the tube. OCC describes them as the following:

Lip Tar: Stained Gloss™ is OCC’s newest texture innovation for lips. Inspired by lighting gels and stained glass, Stained Gloss combines the colour saturation of Lip Tar™ with a casual glossy finish that’s ready-to-wear from its first slick application to the high impact stain it leaves behind.

Final Thoughts:

I don’t particularly like lipgloss, even though I find myself obsessively hoarding it. Of all the lip glosses that I own, I think that these OCC Lip Gloss’s are my favorite. The texture is smooth, and not sticky at all. The color intensity is fantastic even though the formula itself is very sheer and translucent. They wear just like any other gloss, for maybe 2-3 hours without eating or drinking. Once the initial gloss wears off, the formula leaves a very nice stain on the lips. Although the formula is great, the packaging I don’t think is really beneficial o a gloss product. The tube makes it difficult to apply on the go, which in my opinion something a gloss should be. Although it can easily be applied with your finger, its messy and they brush is just another thing to carry around making it a pain. This isn’t so much a problem with the original matte lip tars as they wear long enough that you don’t need to touch them up while you are out. Another problem I ran into was one aspect to the formula. Although it is great and comfortable to wear on the lips, I noticed that some colors were more viscous than others and therefore do not wear as well. Both Androgyne and Dekadent were very watery and a bit more difficult to work with. Androgyne was able to build nicely once you laid one layer down and let it dry a bit. However Dekadent was not as forgiving. The formula was too slippery to stick to anything but itself and would settle in the lines of your lips. It is a shame as Dekadent in my opinion was the most wearable shade of all of them.

PROS:

  • Good texture, comfortable to wear, not sticky
  • Color intensity
  • Vegan and Cruelty Free

CONS:

  • Viscosity
  • Packaging

The Math:

Each OCC Stained Gloss retails for $18.00USD. The packaging holds approximately .33oz of product, translating to about $54.00USD per ounce. For comparison purposes, MAC Tinted Lipglass retails for $15.00USD  and holds approximately .17oz of product, translating to about $88USD per ounce. I purchased these as a trio from Sephora for $39.50USD. The trio included the three lip glosses above in addition to a full sized OCC lip brush. Purchasing all three OCC Stained Glosses separately would cost $54.00USD, this is about $14.50 more than the trio. Via the Sephora OCC Stained Gloss Trio, cost per ounce decreases from $54.00USD per ounce to $40.00USD per ounce.
